On Vashon Island, Washington there is a bike that has grown into a tree. As the story goes, a boy left his bike chained there when he went off to war in 1914. He never returned. The bike remained where he had left it, either forgotten by time or as a tribute to his memory.
The harrowing work of the American artist John Singer Sargent, Gassed, remembers the torment passed by the soldiers who inhaled poisonous gas. At first the gas was used as a weapon by the Germans near Ypres in April 1915, but both sides came to employ some form of combat with gas.
